The Ultimate Guide to Software-defined Networking
2024 edition
Overview

Also known as SDN.

A Software Defined Network (SDN) separates two aspects of the transmission of data across a network, delivering increased flexibility and improved efficiency. These aspects are the data itself and the network traffic controls. ‘Software Defined’ means the definitions of the network capability can and do change, a useful characteristic in a dynamic industry where new techniques for improved transmission are constantly appearing. SDN is typically applied in the data centre.

Network Function Virtualisation applies the principles of virtualisation (the creation of an abstract, virtual version) of network functions, separating these functions from specific hardware platforms. This allows systems administrators to improve efficiency and gain flexibility, changing the network functions as and when required without the restrictions associated with hardware limitations.
